Supporting a Literary Cause

Save 1 Million Black Books

Supporting an urgent campaign to protect one of Britain’s largest collections of Black literature and help return it to the community.

Community Initiative

Help Preserve a Major Collection of Black Literature

The Save 1 Million Black Books campaign has been created by the Black British Book Festival in support of Pepukayi and the Maa Maat Centre in Tottenham, London.

For more than fifty years, Pepukayi has worked to make Black literature available to readers, schools, libraries and community organisations. The collection now contains more than one million books, including rare and out-of-print titles.

The campaign is raising funds to secure the building, make the premises safe and accessible, and begin cataloguing and digitising the collection so that these books can once again reach the people they were collected for.

This initiative is independently organised. Courtney Sharpe is featuring it as a cause worthy of wider awareness and support.

The campaign aims to help:

01

Secure the Maa Maat Centre against further break-ins.

02

Make the premises safe and accessible to the public.

03

Begin cataloguing, digitising and protecting the collection.
